Love Behind Enemy Lines by Jeanette Anderson is a forbidden romance tale of Palestinian Jannah al-Jarbouni and Israeli, Efron Oved. From the moment their eyes met, both Efron and Jannah had felt an irresistible attraction toward each other. Their union, albeit risky, was full of passion and undeniable urgency. Their romance came to an abrupt halt when an airstrike killed Jannah’s family. Yet, this was not the only tragedy that tore her heart; the evidence found at the spot framed Efron as the reason for this airstrike. With this knowledge, Jannah knew there was no hope for Jannah-Efron love story. Unbeknownst to her, an evil lurking in her distant family was the root cause of not only her agony but also the culprit murdering innocents in the name of justice.
Of course, I’ll be calm, she thought. After all, you shot and killed my husband, tore down our home, incarcerated me for being a Palestinian, and don’t care if my baby lives or dies. What could be more reassuring than that?

A romance that is destined to doom, yet tugs at the reader’s heartstrings to hope for a joyous reunion of the lovers, is the most memorable one. Reading such a love story not only entertains the readers but also inspires them to spread a word about peace and love and many atrocities of an egotistical war. Love Behind Enemy Lines is one such romantic fiction. The horrid graphics of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict in the book encourages the audience to observe firsthand how such conflicts only give rise to misunderstood violence. This conflict birthed suicide bombers, massacres, and destruction.
Besan only stared ahead. The breeze lightly flapped her hijab. For a fleeting moment, Besan’s coat fell open, and Jannah caught sight of the cylinders and wires strapped to her chest.

Words have power, and Jeanette Anderson has chosen just the right words to paint the picture of violence and hopelessness. The beauty of her craft is that even in such a dark portrait, she managed to create strokes of love. From the conversations to their thoughts, every single sentence is filled with emotions of pain, craving of a better tomorrow, and anger at the unfairness of it all. The difficult decisions that Jannah and Efron had to take made even the readers scratch their heads. Ranging from the twists to the diverse portrayal of the characters, Love Behind Enemy Lines by Jeanette Anderson has proved to be a commendable read.
