Truth of the Shadows by Slade Templeton is a psychological thriller/horror fiction that revolves around Dr. Joseph Hoffman. He was a head psychiatrist at Cottage Grove Hospital who relied on logic and his vast knowledge seconded by science. In front of his patients, who talked about furniture moving at its own will, their dead son coming back to be with her, hallucinations of angels, etc., Joseph was the calm and composed psychiatrist who had a logical explanation for their delusional paranoia. However, underneath his confident demeanor resided an ever-consuming guilt and sorrow.

“She said she didn’t want to live anymore. We thought she was just seeking attention, but it started to seem very real when she would lock herself in her room and not come out. Sometimes she doesn’t even make sense. Her eyes change when she looks at us. Flat and expressionless. She’s paranoid, suspicious of everything everyone is doing. Sometimes… sometimes she can become so angry that we are scared she will hurt us.”

Ever since his wife died in an accident, twenty five years ago, he assumed a life of solitude. Lately, however, peculiar memories from his childhood began surfacing in his head, filling his cerebral brain with confusion and images of his dead wife. To add to his growing list of strange phenomena, a new patient, nineteen-years-old Jennifer, instituted apprehension by her challenging words and unsettling wisdom. With each passing day, his sanity began slipping from his fingers and so did the peace of Cottage Grove Hospital. Something dark and sinister lurked inside of him that threatened the peaceful, albeit monotonous, life that he had created for himself.

Joseph checked the timestamp on the screen: 2:40 a.m. He remembered sitting up wide awake in his bed at 2:35 a.m. the night before. With a knot in his stomach, he had Reggie rewind the video to 2:35 a.m. That was the exact moment Travis had looked into the camera and spoken.

The tug of war between Joseph’s psychiatric analyses and spine-chilling episodes of patients challenged the readers to pick a side. Did the workaholic doctor finally did a number on his mental health and begin hallucinating? Or, was a dark shadow hellbent on tormenting the good doctor and his patients? As the plot thickened, the patient and descriptive narration morphed into a hair-raising voice. The authentic writing of Slade Templeton painted Doctor Joseph in the most credible color as a psychiatrist. Joseph’s gnawing guilt humanized him, while his flashbacks established an emotional connection with the readers. The tangled webs of his seemingly unrelated past and present made the storyline all the more engrossing. Templeton has pulled together fascinating conversations between the psychiatrist and his patients. In addition to an intriguing plot and gripping narration, Truth of the Shadows has spooky graphics and interesting chapter titles to further enhance the reading experience. Psychological thriller readers would read and recommend Truth of the Shadows by Slade Templeton.

“Very nice review. Ankita understood what I was trying to convey. The parallels in regard to today’s gender concerns apparently struck a cord. I know it’s a simple story about good vs evil, but I wanted Ankita and other readers to be able to look beneath the surface of the story. She does this in…
