Set in the 1950s, I never Called him Pa by Diane Kane is a historical fiction that encourages readers to live their lives with love, devotion, and respect. Henry was hardly even five years old when his Ma left him for a man or an adventure. His grandmother, whom he called Gram, began taking care of him. Henry never knew his father, so he couldn’t entirely miss the man. However, he missed his Ma almost every single day. His life in the country was content at large, yet there was something missing. That missing piece of the puzzle came in the form of a man named Ernest. When he entered Henry and his Gram’s house, he was a man on the verge of dying. Nevertheless, soon, he defeated his illness and even instilled a new joy and faith in the lives of everyone he met.
Gram and I sat in our regular chairs, and Ernest sat at the head of the table. Then, while he said the grace, I peeked across the table to Ma’s empty seat and missed her for a minute. But I figured she was having a Christmas meal with her new friend — and I had mine with Ernest and Gram.
