Starter Wife by Bethany Lopez: A Compelling Tale of Love and Betrayal | Book Review

I have reviewed Starter Wife by Bethany Lopez for Reader’s Favorite.

Starter Wife by Bethany Lopez is a romantic fiction that encourages second chances at love and the obstacles that follow this journey. Although Whitney tried therapy to handle her emotions better and help her move on in life, she still struggles to trust men. After being cheated by her husband of more than twenty years of marriage, who can blame her reluctance? Yet, when she meets the handsome Luca, she cannot deny the sparks flying all around her. She wants to give love another chance, but the fear of getting hurt again overwhelms her. While she can do nothing more than taking it slow, Luca wishes to start a new life with her and her kids as soon as possible. The mismatch in their emotional standing puts this fledgling romance at risk.

Bethany Lopez’s portrayal of characters is on point. She never loses sight of their nature, apprehensions, desires, and passions. By taking advantage of the human tendency to deviate from their beliefs, Bethany Lopez has infused sufficient drama into the plot. Women, who were cheated on by their partners, will be able to see themselves in Whitney. As she takes baby steps toward a second chance, they will both cheer and understand her. If the story had a little more drama, then it would have been a memorable book. There were not sufficient bumps in the road to put the readers on the edge of their seats. Whitney and Luca’s “accidental” meetings were quite predictable, but that didn’t take away the beautiful experience of watching a budding romance bloom. Even though there are a couple of comic moments, Starter Wife cannot be put under the Romantic Comedy category. Starter Wife by Bethany Lopez is a fast-paced story of second chances, friendships, cocktails, and love.
