THE WHOLE OF THE MOON

I have reviewed THE WHOLE OF THE MOON – Don’t all Teenagers Watch Porn? by Anna Perera for Reader’s Favorite.

While his mom was driving Evan and his sister, Marya, to the school, Marya caught him looking at hardcore porn and told their mom about it. Instead of feeling guilty or ashamed, he made everything worse by saying,

‘I wanna rape a girl, kill her, then kill myself.’

The notorious statement called for an immediate action. Without telling either of the kids, their mom planned a special trip to Andalucia, Spain. On reaching Arcadia, “the self-sustaining eco-community”, Evan was beside himself with anger. Almost non-existent WiFi only added fuel to the fire. Arcadia was filled with many other people, who appeared very different and open-minded. As they began introducing themselves, Marya became more perplexed than ever. She wondered if they are in for a sex education?

No one takes much notice unless a compromising picture of an underage gets posted on Facebook. To stop parents from checking what their kids are up to, new apps have been invented to make it harder for them to spy, but horrible, unbelievable suggestions, insults and photos are always doing the rounds.

THE WHOLE OF THE MOON – Don’t all Teenagers Watch Porn? by Anna Perera begins with Evan’s addiction to the hardcore porn, and then goes on to discuss the sickening effects of porn on the society. Worried about the changed personality of her sweet younger brother, Myra does not comprehend how to help him. However, Myra has her own demons to fight. Her secret that weighs heavy on her heart intrigues the readers to keep on reading.

It’s easy to imagine being that free but I have an irrational fear of not fitting in so it wouldn’t really work for me, or would it? Good exam results, university, a proper job that squeezed you into acquiring social status and endless stuff, they were the things we were told that mattered but what did they lead to but stress and panic? Without a sense of belonging what was the point in any of it?

Along with the issues of Evan, Anna Perera has included some mind-blowing aspects of life to the story. The alternative lifestyle of Arcadia opens up the brains of the characters. Although the primary goal of THE WHOLE OF THE MOON is to spread awareness about porn’s disturbing effects, the book remains far from monotonous. Anna Perera is a remarkable storyteller. Even though, she keeps the tone of the book playful, she manages to touch the soul of her audience. Porn industry that strikes as a harmless billion dollar industry is actually built upon many gut-wrenching stories. THE WHOLE OF THE MOON – Don’t all Teenagers Watch Porn? by Anna Perera shares the horror behind this industry in a very engaging manner.

At the stain on the chest of my green T-shirt dress where the first tear fell and cried for my brother who used to be normal, brave and confident and now is nothing but a porn addict who needs help. Then I felt afraid.

  1. The book seems interesting. Is it too intense? And is it written in the first person?

    1. Yes, the book is written in the first person narrative. It is in the voice of the porn-addicted boy’s sister. How she feels about his addiction among other things. The author has done a fabulous job of keeping the story far from being too intense. The relevant issues are discussed but the plot remained mostly light.

      1. Oh good. Because I would like to read it but can’t deal with anything intense right now.

        1. Then you’re good to go with this one 🥰
