“Who runs the world? Girls do.” In the book, Inevitable Ascension, V.K.McAllister has definitely set this theme. Violina and Lux are two friends who work together to capture rare animals and then sell them to the collectors of the rarities. Sometimes, the collectors refused to pay the agreed-upon price and then Lux and Violina made sure that these thieves would pay in one way or another. One day, a very strange woman, Vexia, approached them to get her hands on a rare animal, dreichoden. When Violina and Lux went to deliver the animal, they found Vexia standing next to a dead body. However, before they could do anything about it, the law enforcers assumed them to be the guilty party. In order to get away from the crime scene, Lux and Violina ran as fast as they could. Little did they know that this chase would take them through a portal to a time in the past where a handful of people are trying to kill a dictator, Kza. Not only would they time travel to the past and the future, they would be at the center of each battle.
As I was reading about Violina and Lux, their characteristics reminded me of Rizzoli and Isles TV series. Violina is a no-nonsense girl who reminds me of Rizzoli; whereas Lux is a lover of words and keeps the mood on a lighter side — just like Isles of Rizzoli and Isles. Anyway, coming back to the book, it is filled with action, adventure, suspense, and time-traveling. However, at one point of time, I got really confused as there was too much time traveling going on. A piece of advice for my fellow readers, when you are reading Inevitable Ascension, make sure that u read it till the end or else you might not be able to really connect the dots. There are many twists to keep one on the edge of their seats. It is an action packed book; therefore, the action lovers would get plenty of doses to sate their appetite. Before you think that it is a one-dimensional book with only action in it, I must tell you that the author has done an incredible job of placing light moments here and there.
I liked the character of Lux more than that of Violina because she has more shades than Violina. Her puns are funny and she is a better human being. Lux’s love toward animals is something I found quite admirable. However, her logic of killing animals seemed contradictory to her animal-loving nature. Sometimes, her long dialogues in the middle of a crisis seemed out of place to me, but that did not decrease my fondness for her character. All the characters are well written and the plot moves nicely with their help. As I said, just give your 100% attention while reading Inevitable Ascension or you might feel lost.
A few dialogues are quite insightful and thought-provoking. My favorite one is,
“Fascinating how that works. People can spend decades building a life and all it takes is a couple seconds from an external force to destroy it all.”
Overall, as a reader, I found Inevitable Ascension a one time read. The imagination of the author is certainly praiseworthy. I loved the fact that no unnecessary love scene is stuffed in the book. True friendship remained at the core of the plot and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I would recommend this book to the readers who enjoy an action packed plot with a lot of time traveling.
